Profile SDK Compatibility FAQs
If my application is built with the 1.4 SDK, will it run under 2.1?
Yes it will. You shouldn't even need to relink. But if you're using the PdrGetMovieState API, read below.
If my application is built with the 2.1 SDK, will it run under 1.4?
Depends. If you're using any APIs added since 1.4, then of course it won't. If this is the case you'll see an error dialog from Windows NT at load time specifying a "missing entry point". Also, if you're using the PdrGetMovieState API, read below.
What's the problem with PdrGetMovieState?
Re this function in particular, 2.0 introduced a bug when the PdrMovieState struct size increased by 8 bytes as two fields were added (markIn and ma rkOut). PdrMovieState is the only struct whose size was modified between versions, and we don't intend to make this mistake again!
Thus, an application written to the 1.4 release of the SDK and using PdrGetMovieState will experience memory corruption when run on any release after 2.0. The newer 2.x system software will attempt to write the addition al 8 bytes, corrupting whatever values happen to lie after the smaller movie state struct.
So what should you do? If you have an existing application written with the 1.4 SDK and using PdrGetMovieState, you may want to edit pdrtypes.h to add an additional 8 bytes of pad at the end of the PdrMovieState structure. After doing this you will need to recompile.
Going the other way is less severe: if you use PdrGetMovieState from the 2.x sdk and run against 1.4, the two added fields will be meaningless (since 1.4 doesn't know about them). As a workaround for this case, you may want to check the library version number before relying on the markIn and markOut values.
Why can't I find documentation for the 2.1 SDK?
The SDK changes required for 2.1 were only incremental. For the most part, you should continue to use the documentation accompanying the 1.4 SDKall of these APIs apply equally to 2.1, and even give you access to video networking under 2.1.
Where the SDK has changed in 2.1 is as follows:
The Profile Library System introduces an entire new software library with a number of new APIs. Documentation for PLS is kept up-to-date on the developer ftp site.
In addition, there have been a handful of small additions to the API, mostly to support added features on the new audio card found in the PDR 200. Documentation for any new APIs will be coming out as a new online document. In the meantime, if you hav e questions about new audio features, contact Tektronix for the latest information.
If my application was built way back with 1.3 what should I do?
If you wrote an API application under Profile system software 1.3, you will want to read the document on Converting your 1.3 application to 1.4. All of this applies equally to converting it to 2.1.
