WLEX's New Digital Plant Standardizes on Grass Valley Gear/Profile Video Servers

—Station On Air with 601 Facility in Lexington—

NEVADA CITY, Calif., August 24, 1999 — NBC affiliate WLEX-TV began broadcasting June 14 from its new digital plant in Lexington, Kentucky using $1.2 million worth of Grass Valley™ equipment. The greenfield build-up facility is equipped with Grass Valley switchers, routers, master control, digital video effects and Profile® video servers. Synergestic Technology, Inc., Western Pennsylvania's largest dealer for professional video products, is the system integrator for the project.

WLEX has been a pioneer in the Kentucky market. It was the first full-color station in Kentucky, the first full-color UHF station in the U.S., and the first station in Lexington with broadcast-quality Electronic News Gathering. It provided the first stereo sound in Lexington, and it was the first station in Lexington to have its own website. Being the first in Lexington to open a 601 facility continues in this tradition.

"WLEX is committed to being first in technology advances. Continuing in this tradition, building a digital plant was our opportunity to make our mark on the broadcast community," said John Duvall, general manager, WLEX-TV. "Grass Valley Group was the perfect choice of partner when it came to equipping the new plant. With over 40 years in the broadcast business, they have the experience and technical acumen necessary to provide equipment for such a project."

"Nowhere is reliable, flexible, powerful technology more important than in the broadcast of daily news and sports events. We are proud to be able to provide leading-edge products to an innovator such as WLEX," said Tim Thorsteinson, president and chief operating officer, Grass Valley Group.

Equipment installed at the plant includes Grass Valley Models 4000-3 and 2200 production switchers, Grass Valley Krystal™ digital video effects, an award-winning Grass Valley M-2100 master control system, a Grass Valley SMS-7000 routing system, and multiple Emmy® award-winning Profile video servers.

The installation exemplifies Grass Valley Group's Digital Media Foundation™ (DMF) initiative which provides broadcasters, producers and content suppliers a distributed network of storage devices, linked via audio/video routers and data networks. These networks offer an open-systems environment for applications ranging from editing and live production to on-air replay. The DMF initiative also defines a strategy for a gradual, cost-effective transition toward digital television, maximizing a company's new facilities investments.

Whether it's distributing video over the air, through digital broadcast facilities and across standard data networks, or providing the industry's best video storage or production products, the Grass Valley Group has the digital solution. Grass Valley Group continues its video industry leadership with new Profile and Grass Valley products to enable video professionals to realize the full potential of going digital.
