Veteran Brazilian Network Completes $4 Million Conversion to Grass
Valley Group Digital Products
New Rede Record Production Facility Touches All Major Product
Lines
NEVADA CITY, Calif., Nov. 2, 1999
Brazil's oldest television network now has the latest production
technologies. Rede Record, whose affiliates reach almost 85 percent of
the Brazilian population, recently converted its São Paulo
production facility from analog to digital using Grass Valley Group
products. The $4 million (US) effort spans all major Grass Valley Group
product lines, including Grass Valley
switchers and signal-management products as
well as the Profile® line of
digital video servers. It also represents a strong, cooperative effort
by the Grass Valley Group, its local distributor, Videodata, and Rede
Record to meet the network's summer on-air deadline.
"This was truly a team effort by all," said Roberto Franco, Rede
Record's director of engineering and operations. "Integrating all this
technology was hard work but with the dedication of the Grass Valley
Group, Videodata, and Rede Record's people, we successfully met our
on-air date."
Used for on-air production and news broadcasting, Rede Record's new
digital facility includes three Grass Valley Model 4000-3 switchers, a
Model 4000-2 switcher, a Model 2200 switcher for promotions and post
production, a Model 1200 switcher, 10 channels of Krystal
digital effects, and four channels of master
control. It also features two Series 7000 Signal Management System
routers (SMS-7000) and a host of modular products. Rede Record also
purchased two Profile PDR-200 digital video servers to form a redundant
system for playing out its signal to São Paulo City and the rest
of Brazil.
"Every day, we stake our business on the quality of our products and
our ability to understand and meet the intricate needs of our
customers," said Tim Thorsteinson, president and chief operating
officer of the Grass Valley Group. "As a result, it's very satisfying
to have played a part in the creation of Rede Record's new
facility."
The Grass Valley Group's Emmy®
award-winning production systems are the industry pacesetters for
reliability, quality, and intuitive user-interfaces. Designed to
unleash customer creativity in live operation and post-production
settings, the product line includes the recently introduced
Kalypso Video Production Center
family, which combines industry-leading switching and powerful M/E
capabilities with an open, networked architecture that offers a
precedent-setting degree of operational automation.
The Grass Valley Group's signal management systems enjoy a sterling
reputation among broadcast and video professionals. These systems
include the Grass Valley 7500 Series routers, a new family of matrix
frames for switching digital audio and video signals. They also include
the Grass Valley Group's modular products. The company has introduced
15 new modules since January and 24 in the last 12 months.
The Profile digital video server line is the most popular in the
broadcast market, with more than 23,500 channels shipped. Widely
regarded as the cornerstone of the digital transition, it is also the
industry's most open platform, supporting JPEG, MPEG, DVCPro and HDTV
formats. The line includes the recently introduced Profile XP Media
platform, a portal for rapid access, management and distribution of
video, audio and data assets that maintains the broadcast-quality video
and audio for which the Profile server line is known.
The Grass Valley Group is a privately held digital broadcast and
video equipment company at the forefront of the transition to digital
transmission and video content production and has more than $2 billion

family and the Grass Valley router, switcher and modular product
