University of Nebraska Women's Basketball Team Tips Off Season With
Profile PRO Series Platform
Grass Valley Group's Digital Video Recorder, Dixon Sports Computing
Software Combine To Cut Highlights Package Preparation Time in Half
NEVADA CITY, Calif., Nov. 29, 1999 The
University of Nebraska women's basketball team has added some off-court
talent to bolster its on-court performance. The Huskers, picked to finish
third in the Big 12 conference in a pre-season coach's poll, are using the
Grass Valley Group's Profile® PRO
Series video disk recorder and sports-analysis software from Dixon Sports
Computing to prepare for upcoming games and to review the results of past
match-ups. The impact has been immediate and significant.
"We've cut the time necessary to prepare highlight packages in half,"
said Jeff Walz, assistant coach of the Huskers women's team. "The amount
of work we can now produce is amazing."
Reviewing game highlights has long helped professional and collegiate
athletes gain a competitive edge. Yet assembling them using traditional,
non-linear videotape machines can be time-consuming. The Profile PRO
Series offers a fast, easy, and cost-effective alternative. Much like
songs on a compact disc, it captures and stores video of specific passes,
picks, or shots for instant recall, without the wasted time of rewinding
or advancing a videotape. Combined with the Dixon software, the Profile
PRO Series lets coaches quickly identify and assemble key video clips for
a variety of uses.
"We can include the same pick-and-roll play in highlight packages for
a guard, a forward, or the entire team," Walz said. "That ability to
combine customization with video re-use can accelerate a player's
development as well as the team's overall performance."
Using a two-channel Profile PRO Series recorder, Walz and the Husker
staff will capture and store full-length video from the Huskers' 25
regularly scheduled games as well as games of their opponents. Using the
Dixon software package, the coaches can then identify and log specific
highlights in a database of video clips that they can search, sort, and
assemble in any order.
"As PCs brought the power of computing to the desktop, digital video
technologies are giving organizations of all sizes cutting-edge tools
never before available," said Tim Thorsteinson, president and chief
operating officer of the Grass Valley Group. "We're excited to see new
markets gain access to the power and performance of Profile technology,
and we're proud of the role it's playing at the University of
Nebraska."
"Dixon Sports is proud to partner with the Grass Valley Group to
provide sports teams of all sizes with innovative tools to improve their
competitiveness," said Michael Dixon, president of Dixon Sports
Computing.
"The powerful capabilities of our software and the ease of use of the
Profile PRO Series recorder is a perfect match for our customers."
