Grass Valley Group Works With Dolby Labs
To Incorporate Dolby E Into Profile XP Media Platform
Server Platform First to Support Audio Leader's Multi-Channel
Format
NEVADA CITY, Calif., Jan. 27, 2000
Imagine the
surround sound of the movie theater in your living room whenever you turn
on a television. Today's announcement of the integration of Dolby E
compatibility with the Grass Valley Group's Profile® XP Media Platform sets the stage for
broadcasters and video professionals to do just that: distribute
high-quality, multi-channel audio through their stereo-capable digital
facilities more conveniently and economically than previously possible to
create a richer viewing experience. Dolby E is a new professional audio
coding system from Dolby Laboratories. In addition, the Profile platform
supports the industry-standard Dolby Digital (AC-3) format, the audio
coding standard specified by the ATSC for digital television and can pass
MPEG layer 2 audio.
The Profile XP Media Platform is a portal for rapid access,
management, and distribution of video, audio, and data assets that
supports most compression formats and both standard- and high-definition
signals. Dolby E is designed to ease the transition from two-channel to
multi-channel audio, enabling the distribution of up to eight channels of
high-quality audio, as well as Dolby Digital metadata, via a single
AES/EBU pair, thus enabling stereo-capable devices such as routing
switchers, digital video tape recorders, digital audio tape decks, or
video servers to handle up to eight channels of audio. This capability
provides enough tracks for a 5.1 channel sound plus a stereo mix to be
routed and stored together on any of these devices. In these applications
the Profile XP Media Platform is used with Dolby's DP571 encoders and
DP572 decoders.
Dolby E is coming into common use in the production community as a
solution to extend the flexibility of digital routing and storage
equipment as more producers seek to produce for the new 5.1-channel audio
DTV standards. Its integration in Profile XP Media Platform includes the
ability to store the compressed audio streams, to detect the number of
channels in the stream, and to drive audio metering by reading metadata
continued in the Dolby E data stream. The Profile XP Media Platform is
also compatible with Dolby Digital which is used in DTV, DVD authoring,
digital broadcast satellite (DBS), and digital cable systems and is used
where the Profile server is sourcing programming for final emission via
an uplink to the home.
"As industry-leading audio experts, we wanted to work with
industry-leading video experts," said Tom Daily, marketing manager for
Dolby Labs. "The flexibility of the Profile XP Media Platform and its
widespread use among broadcasters made the Grass Valley Group a perfect
fit."
"Dolby is the brand name for quality audio for television, multimedia,
music, and the movies, while Profile is the standard for rapid access,
management, and distribution of video, audio, and data," said Tim
Thorsteinson, president and chief operating officer of the Grass Valley
Group. "Now broadcasters and emerging digicasters will be able to fully
leverage these two powerful products to deliver 'being there' experiences
to their viewers."
The incorporation of the Dolby E format into the Profile XP Media
Platform exemplifies the Grass Valley Group's Media Without
Bounds technology and solutions
initiative. Driving that initiative is the belief that content creators
need the freedom to access, create, and distribute materials without
regard to format, resolution, protocol, or geography.
