Grass Valley Group And Sony Demonstrate
Compatibility Between Vibrint NewsEdit And Sony NewsBase System At NAB
2000
Companies Commit to Providing Integration Through Open Systems and
Standards-Based Technologies
LAS VEGAS (National Association of Broadcasters
Convention), April 10, 2000 The Grass Valley Group and
Sony Electronics, Inc. announced today that they will provide integration
between the Vibrint NewsEdit
nonlinear editing system and the Sony NewsBase system relying on open
systems and standards-based technologies. NewsBase is a server-based news
production system that supports feed recording, editing, on-air playback,
and newsroom desktop video browsing and editing. Vibrint NewsEdit is the
first truly open nonlinear editing system designed and priced to match the
capabilities of a standard record deck. It is the first non-Sony nonlinear
news editing system editor to work within the NewsBase environment.
Control compatibility between the two solutions will provide news
broadcasters with a cost-effective alternative for integrating hard news
nonlinear editing within the Sony news production environment. Currently
using an SDI interface to the Sony system, the Grass Valley Group will
also offer SDTI-CP (Serial Data Transport Interface-Content Package)
compatibility in the future.
"The Grass Valley Group is very excited about continuing product
integration efforts that began last NAB when Vibrint and Sony demonstrated
compatibility between Betacam SX products and Vibrint NewsEdit," said Tim
Thorsteinson, president and chief operating officer of the Grass Valley
Group. "Interoperability is a key objective for the Grass Valley Group and
we are dedicated to interfacing the Vibrint digital news production
workgroup with third party servers based on open standards, as well as to
interfacing our Profile with third party news editors."
At NAB 2000, the Grass Valley Group is demonstrating SDTI-CP
interoperability between Profile
digital video platforms and the Sony MPEG IMX VTRs as well as SDI
interoperability between Vibrint NewsEdit and NewsBase. The companies also
plan to provide SDTI-CP connectivity between Sony's products and Vibrint
digital news production workgroups, including NewsEdit.
"Since NAB '99, the broadcast industry has responded very positively
to the steps we are taking towards providing truly interoperable solutions
based on the MPEG-2 standard," said Chris Summey, senior vice president,
systems integration, Sony Electronics, Inc.
"Vibrint's solutions fit well within our strategy for the future
because they have been built right from the start to be open and
standards-based. It's not a matter of re-working legacy software to fit
into a new open environment. We are very pleased to be working with the
Grass Valley Group and their Vibrint product line."
Using the Sony NewsBase and Vibrint NewsEdit systems, broadcasters can
record incoming feeds to the Sony NewsBase system. Even while a feed is
still recording, editors can browse media captured by the NewsBase system
and begin editing directly to a NewsEdit timeline. Because NewsEdit also
supports direct tape-to-disk editing, the NewsBase media can be mixed with
local footage captured on tape without leaving the edit bay. Completed
sequences can be transferred via SDI from NewsEdit to the NewsBase server
for playout, which can begin even before the transfer is complete.
