Grass Valley Group's ContentShare Selected By Editware For Seamless Application Integration

—Standards-based platform creates common language for application developers—

Amsterdam, IBC, 7 September, 2000 — The Grass Valley Group today announced that Editware, the Grass Valley-based developer of the Digital Production Editor (DPE) system and editing software, is incorporating the ContentShare Platform as a fundamental component within its new editing system, the DPE-500 Series.

The platform allows Editware developers to build into their application quickly and easily the ability to track, locate and move material from various locations within an editing facility through the use of an integrated asset management system.

A tool for building media asset management system, the ContentShare platform establishes a common language that provides the ability to find, browse, edit and operate on information, regardless of the originating application. The platform also eliminates the need to know anything about how other applications store data internally, so allowing unrestricted access between production devices.

After attending the weeklong ContentShare University and then utilising the sample source code provided by the Grass Valley Group's software development kit, Editware developers created an application, which incorporates the ContentShare platform within a hybrid-editing environment. Rather than necessitating a re-education process, ContentShare is based on Java and XML — both well-known tools among applications developers. When developers licence ContentShare they may either use the sample code verbatim or write their own application based on the available application programming.

"ContentShare provides the extensibility to create an environment where we can manipulate material from a variety of sources using our own interface — whether it be to track media, find descriptive information about it, or browse and access it based on specific parameters," said Jay Coley, president of Editware.

"Because the tools upon which ContentShare is based are well-tested and because Grass Valley Group provides such extensive support, we were able to quickly get up to speed, implementing the application on our Digital Production Editor in a timely manner."

"ContentShare is becoming a widely adopted platform. The first of its kind, it breaks down the walls that otherwise exist in the exchange of video and other assets between applications," said Tim Thorsteinson, president of the Grass Valley Group.

"A common language eliminates the need for custom interfaces, decreasing integration time and significantly reducing costs associated with integrated systems software development."

Editware and the Linear Environment

Editware's DPE-500 is based on the traditional linear editing environment, but has the added ability to perform at a nonlinear speed through interfacing with the Grass Valley Group's Profile XP Media Platform. As more and more material comes from an increased number of sources, Editware's DPE addresses directly the need for edit controllers to pull together a myriad of material into one common production at one location.

"ContentShare allowed us to write a simple, straightforward application that permits an editor to access and use material in an efficient way," added coley. "ContentShare enhances the value of our product by allowing us to bring material in from other sources while writing very little specialised software.

The ContentShare Platform

In response to the demands for increased integration among applications, Grass Valley Group created ContentShare to ease the access and management of digital assets. By establishing a common language, ContentShare allows one application to request information and assets from many other applications without requiring users to know how the information is stored.

Other asset management solutions that are currently available involve large, expensive custom integration of these applications. This does not offer the flexibility to allow the addition of new tools or to change old ones without additional custom work.

Unlike such systems, ContentShare is a software platform built on widely-used standards, leveraging industry-standard technologies to remit easy access and management of distributed digital assets. As ContentShare continues to be adopted by application developers, additional applications will be introduced that help to manage and effectively utilise the ever expanding variety of media, in the broadcast and production environments.
