iNEWS, Grass Valley Group Announce Tight Integration
Between Media Browse 2000, Vibrint NewsEdit, Profile XP Media Platform,
ContentShare
Delivers the industry's most capable newsroom solution for up-to-the-second
broadcasts on line, on air
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, (International Broadcasting
Convention), 7 September 2000 - The Grass Valley Group,
a digital media leader, and iNEWS (formerly known as Avstar) the leading
provider of convergence newscasting solutions for television networks,
local stations, and webcast networks, today announced plans to tightly
integrate the iNEWS newsroom computer system and Media Browse 2000
high-end browsing solutions with Grass Valley Group's Vibrint
NewsEdit digital news production system, Profile® XP
Media Platform, and ContentShare software platform for media
access and management. The result will be the industry's most complete
newsroom solution, providing news professionals powerful media access so
they can get their stories on air and on line quickly.
Unlike other newsroom solutions, the iNEWS and Grass Valley Group
newsroom products go beyond the simple task of enabling journalists and
editors to integrate text with editing through the iNEWS Media Browse
software and Grass Valley Group's NewsEdit. Now, powerful editing
capabilities are automatically available on journalists' and editors'
desktops; news content providers can now simultaneously browse incoming
feeds, work with video, script stories and manage running orders all from
the same workstation. And, they can consolidate their material on Vibrint
NewsEdit and Profile XP Media Platforms for mixing with archived material
or fresh local field tapes, enhancing with wipes or dissolves, and
providing ready access to anyone, anywhere, and at any time in the
organisation even for immediate re-purposing to the Web.
The combined products give journalists more control in initial story
production and enable editors to focus on developing more refined packages.
"In the competitive and fast-paced news environment, workflow flexibility
provides an important advantage to newsrooms," said Mike Cronk, vice president
of marketing, Grass Valley Group. "With the combined Vibrint digital news
group products, the Profile XP Media Platform and ContentShare media access
and management software, and the unique iNEWS Media Browse, newsroom
professionals will be unstoppable."
"With the exponential growth in media assets, search solutions are
critical to helping producers, editors and journalists find the media assets
that they need, access them - and utilise them instantaneously," said matt
danilowicz, ceo and president of inews. "The addition of Media Browse 2000
as a low-resolution browser for the Grass Valley Group's comprehensive
digital news production systems and software will give newsrooms superior
browse/edit technology for delivering up-to-the-second broadcasts."
Changing Newsroom Workflows
Acknowledging the extreme pressures introduced by the need to
purpose content for both television and the Web with essentially the same
staff resources, the combined Grass Valley Group/iNEWS newsroom hardware
and software solutions are ushering in a new era of speed and flexibility
to newsrooms worldwide.
Media Browse 2000 offers news content providers enhanced functionality
and features such as the ability to initiate and manage video recording
on high- and low-resolution servers, management of media assets and feed
schedules, and generation of video output for easy streaming to the Web.
News organisations can air late-breaking news immediately from real-time
line feeds, raw footage and field coverageall recorded directly to the
server for the entire news team. With iNewscasting tools,
broadcasters are empowered to stream video to the Web or post searchable
video clips to a Web site, reaching the widest possible audience. As with
all iNEWS products, Media Browse 2000 is based on open, industry-standard
software, hardware and network technology.
Bringing faster hard news production to newsrooms worldwide, the Grass
Valley Group's Vibrint Digital News Production line of powerful, PC-based
software solutions, now available in PAL (50/625) format, gets breaking
news to air faster at less cost than traditional tape-based production
gear. Leaders in the top US television markets, including New York, Los
Angeles, Boston and San Francisco, now use Vibrint's solutions for
interactive feed capture and selection, digital editing, and playback
solutions.
With Vibrint FeedClip, producers can create clips on the fly, send
them to an edit bay over the newsroom's existing network, and continue to
monitor a feed without interrupting the recording process. With Vibrint
NewsEdit, editors can edit from tape to disk without pre-digitising.
Other key NewsEdit features include audio/video punch-in, frame-accurate
editing, splice edit mode for inserting a new clip between existing ones
without having to re-edit previous work, simple effects, and fit-to-fill
for inserting pre-produced graphics, variable-speed clips or still frames
into an existing story. Built to easily scale as broadcasters transition
to digital and the Internet, the Vibrint solutions are powered by an Intel
Pentium platform relying on standard MPEG-2 video, Microsoft Windows NT
file and operating systems, and standard networking and storage
technologies.
The Profile XP Media Platform is the industry's most popular video
server, with more installed and storing more broadcast content than any
other server. It is also the most open solution, supporting both the
high-quality standards required for broadcast television and
low-resolution required for the Internet, as well as MPEG, DVCPRO, HD and
MPEG Transport Streams (MTS). While traditional servers typically offer
only playback and storage capabilities, the Profile XP Media Platform,
with its Microsoft Windows NT architecture and standard networking and
storage technologies, is extensible to new applications inside and
outside a broadcast facility, including news production.
The ContentShare software holds the key to easily linking video with
its related text, audio and graphics assets. Built with Internet-standard
technologies, the ContentShare platform uses the Java development language
for platform independence with the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and
eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) standards for describing and formatting
data. Using ContentShare, only one interface is necessary to provide Internet
or Internet access to applications. iNews uses the ContentShare software
platform to enable Media Browse 2000 to manage assets across platforms.
Grass Valley Group and iNEWS will demonstrate the integration between
Vibrint and Media Browse 2000 at IBC in Amsterdam on the Grass Valley Group
Booth (1.110) and on Grass Valley Group's booth (1529) and the iNEWS booth
(1113) at RTNDA (Radio and Television News Directors Association) in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
