HTV Chooses Grass Valley Group Kalypso
Video Production Centre As Key Component In Move To
Digital
Amsterdam, IBC, 8 September, 2000 A new
Grass Valley Group Kalypso Video Production Centre has been ordered by
regional UK broadcaster, HTV Wales, as part of a major digital upgrade to
one of its Cardiff studios, used for news and sports programming.
"We have worked with Grass Valley vision mixers for fifteen years now
and have always found them to be reliable," said Mike Bryan, HTV Wales'
head of studio operations. "We are now looking forward to capitalising on
the increased levels of creativity and efficiency that we feel confident
the Kalypso will give us in the future."
The installation will be carried out by HTV's experienced internal
project team and the new facilities are expected to go to air later this
year. The Kalypso will be used to cover Rugby Union for Welsh channel,
S4C, as well as for HTV itself in addition to helping to produce a broad
range of other news and sports shows.
"For us, the Kalypso represented the most cost-effective and flexible
solution available," added bryan, "It is an extremely modern and
well-designed system and the fact that it is easily upgradeable provides
us with the level of future-proofing we require."
"The functionality of the system is very impressive," he continued.
"For our news requirements in particular, we need a powerful mix/effects
architecture. The Kalypso can accommodate our need for 4 mix/effect (ME)
banks for news as well as giving a wide range of different keying
levels."
Kalypso's programmable clean feed system is invaluable to a dual
language broadcaster. It saves HTV Wales considerable time by enabling the
creation of Welsh and English language version programme outputs
simultaneously from the same background inputs.
The Kalypso's powerful architecture with built-in stills store reduces
HTV's need to install external equipment such as animation still stores
and logo generators.
