Grass Valley Group Integrates Chyron Titling Software With NewsEdit Nonlinear Editing System

Chyron iNFiNiT! family, Duet Lyric file import integrated with Grass Valley NewsEdit system

Amsterdam (International Broadcasting Conference), September 13, 2001 — Delivering on its initiative to speed and simplify the hard news production process, the Grass Valley Group today announced the integration of an integral titling module plus advanced Lyric graphics content creation and playout software from Chyron Corporation (OTC: BB CYRO) with the Grass Valley Group's NewsEdit™ system, the world's fastest nonlinear editing system for hard news production. This integration will speed the titling and effects process for editors—and increase on-air accuracy.

Typically, insertion of titles such as lower thirds under headshots, full-frame video, or graphics has taken place downstream in the production process—in frenzied control rooms during live broadcasts and at lower-than-desirable speeds. Unfortunately, this last-minute process can result in sloppy or simply inaccurate titling and effects.

The integration of the NewsEdit nonlinear editing system and the Chyron titling software overcomes these shortfalls with little or no impact on the news production process. In support of stations' established on-air look and emblematic of the Grass Valley Group's drive for openness, users will now be able to import existing Chyron graphics created by iNFiNiT! family products or Duet-SD and LE directly into the NewsEdit system.

Additionally, editors can easily create titles and other graphics through the easy-to-use Chyron titling module available in the NewsEdit system, or use the more advanced Lyric editing package—all through the NewsEdit interface. This interface changes automatically, depending on the mode in which an editor is working, to display only the tools and information the editor needs.

"By putting control of titling and effects into the news edit bay through the integration of the NewsEdit nonlinear editing system and the Chyron graphics software, the Grass Valley Group and Chyron are offering a new level of speed, accuracy, and polish for stations' on-air look," said Mike Cronk, vice president of marketing for the Grass Valley Group.

"The availability of a Chyron titling module within the NewsEdit system, plus the ability to import existing iNFiNiT! and Duet files will insure consistent channel branding, as well as accurate graphics information for each individual news story," said Rich Hajdu, Americas vice president of sales and marketing for the Chyron Corporation.

About The Products

Offering end-to-end support of DV/DVCPRO and MPEG-based news production, the Grass Valley Digital News Production solution is built for speed and workflow efficiency. It encompasses the entire news production process—from ingest of feeds, triage of the media, third-party desktop browsing, creation of an edited sequence, high-resolution finished editing, playout under control of a rundown, and access to real-time, shared storage.

The vanguard of the solution is the Grass Valley Digital News Production Workgroup, which includes the FeedClip™ interactive feed capture system, NewsEdit nonlinear editing system, and NewsQ™ manual playback application. These PC-based systems all feature native MPEG and DV/DVCPRO support at up to 50 mb/s.

By eliminating pre-digitizing in tape to disk editing, the NewsEdit system is virtually twice as fast as other nonlinear editing systems. It is the industry's only truly open, PC-based editing system designed from the ground up to replace the record deck in cuts-only editing bays. Unlike most other nonlinear editing systems, the NewsEdit system enables editors to view edits as they are made—just like a machine-to-machine edit bay. An edit does not have to be replayed just to be sure it's right.

Based on Chyron's three decades of experience in character generation, the award winning Lyric graphics package is the next step forward for on-air content creation and playout. Distributed workgroup support means material may be created on any Windows™ NT or 2000 OpenGL PC and networked to an iNFiNiT!, Duet, Aprisa, Grass Valley Group NewsEdit system, or other compliant graphics device. Lyric is resolution independent (525/625, 4:3, 16:9) and supports many file formats including Quantel™, TrueType, Targa, TIF, etc.

When content is created for Chyron's Duet™ SD platform, available features and options include 3D animation, clip player, dual channel squeezeback, and a special iNFiNiT! style keyboard.

In support of the growing interactive television market, Lyric ITV can be used to create content for a variety of set top box platforms, with support for HTML, JavaScript, XML, ATVEF transports A and B, and more.
