Principal Engineer

Michael Bruns is a hardware and software design engineer at the Beaverton Design Center for the Grass Valley Group, working on development for the company's Profile® XP Media Server.

Bruns was responsible for the first MPEG decoder based on standard silicon at Tektronix in 1995, prior to the transition from Tektronix's Video and Networking Division to the Grass Valley Group, and has followed developments across three product lines up to the present. Before joining the media server development team, Bruns led the architecture and hardware design of a high-definition serial video to OC-48 SONET/ATM interface.

Previously, Bruns studied field and wave electrodynamics and implemented a number of interconnect designs for gigahertz bandwidth signals in cryogenic environments for superconductor electronics applications.

Bruns is the author of four refereed technical papers and one patent. He's a member of SMPTE and participates in the study group on digital cinema.

Bruns holds a Master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. from Northwestern University.

Bruns is currently responsible for the high level design of the MPEG implementations in the Profile media server product lines for the Grass Valley Group.
